Are you trying to use less plastic?

We are not using plastic plant tags. We are using metal plant tags instead that we make.

Aluminum drink cans provide the perfect plant tag material.

We aren’t using plastic tags because they are bad for the environment and break down into little pieces that are even worse for the environment because animals could eat them and pollute the soil and water. Metal doesn’t disintegrate, well not as quickly at least, and it’s less bad for the environment. Because the cans are aluminum, they don’t even rust!

Author Cameron Begley, 9 years old, showcases his recycled plant tag.

We make the metal tags by cutting up aluminum drink cans. We cut rounded corners so they aren’t sharp. We write on them by using a pen and pushing down just a little bit and writing the plant name.  Then, we push down a lot in one spot to make a hole. We put wire through the hole and then tie it on the plant. Would you like to try this?

The corners on the tags are rounded so they aren’t sharp.

Cameron, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience with using recycled aluminum cans. I think you are a wonderful example of the power of change that young people such as yourself can have in the world. Keep up the planet mindfulness and the writing. Really great job.

What a great idea! And you described the process of making them very clearly. Thank you Cameron!

Hi Cameron. What a great idea! I’m glad you thought of the sharp corners. Could you crimp over the edges with pliers so they aren’t sharp too? Keep on writing! Rob

Probably. I haven’t tried it but it makes sense.

This is a great idea Cameron. I usually use popsicle sticks. I try not to use plastic in the house or garden. 🪴
Thanks for posting!

I just saw this, Cameron. I know. I’m catching up. I love this idea but I don’t have any of those cans. Do you know how I could get some without buying soft drinks or beer?
