Calling All Volunteers!

Published by Adrienne Brown on

Are you interested in meeting like-minded islanders who are actively supporting conservation on S,ḴŦAḴ | Mayne Island? Like many non-profit organizations, our success is built on volunteer power. Whether you are comfortable getting your hands wet and/or dirty, or prefer to help with planning and organization, we have a job that fits your goals and the time you have available!

Board of Directors

Would you consider joining a dynamic group of volunteers who lead a well-respected land trust working to protect 30% of S,ḴŦAḴ | Mayne Island? If so, I would like to hear from you. We can meet over a cup of coffee or tea to talk about the responsibilities and rewards associated with serving on the Conservancy Board of Directors. Please drop me a line: president@mayneconservancy.ca.

Committees

Below is a list of Conservancy committees looking for members. In any given month you might find yourself outside removing invasive plants, planning or volunteering at an event, or possibly writing an article for our website and Oystercatcher newsletter. We have a wide range of opportunities!

Membership & Communications

Work to increase membership, inform members about the natural world, and promote Conservancy events through our communications channels, including in-person events, online, and in the Oystercatcher newsletter.

Governance

Create, edit and review policies, procedures and more. As a member of the Land Trust Alliance of B.C., the Conservancy continues to add to and improve our existing governance framework.

Fundraising

Plan events such as the Speaker Series and May Day, along with seasonal fundraising campaigns.

Events

Plan and stage talks, walking tours, and workshops of all kinds, and represent the Conservancy by helping to staff our booth at the weekly Farmer’s Market.

Indigenous Relations

Plan and participate in activities that build the relationship between the Conservancy and the W̱SÁNEĆ community. These include weaving and language workshops, ethnobotany garden tours. and art shows.

Habitat Restoration

Would you like to invest in the future of S,ḴŦAḴ | Mayne Island’s plant communities while making new acquaintances and enjoying the great outdoors? Natural habitat restoration covers all of these bases! Projects typically include planting native trees or removing invasive species. There’s no obligation to participate in every event. The important thing is to come out when you have the time to contribute!

Kayak Surveys

The Conservancy welcomes volunteers with their own kayaks and safety equipment who are comfortable paddling within 200m of shore under light wind conditions to carry out bull kelp surveys. All training on the survey method is provided in-person. We also provide survey-specific equipment such as GPS, clipboard, and data sheets. It’s a great way to meet people, learn more about our local marine environment, and contribute to marine science. If you are interested in participating, please contact Rob at biologist@mayneconservancy.ca.

Dungeness Crab Citizen Scientist – Summer Season

Do you have a passion for the ocean and its amazing creatures? Every year we recruit volunteers to help monitor the population of young Dungeness crabs in the Salish Sea. The Mayne Island Conservancy partners with the Hakai Institute to collect marine data from a light trap in ALELEN | Miners Bay. This year will be the fourth year of monitoring in ALELEN | Miners Bay, where volunteers observe the tiny crab larvae along with a wide variety of other sea creatures!

Beach Cleanup – Annually in April

The Mayne Island Beach Cleanup is jointly sponsored by the Conservancy and the Mayne Island Recycling Society. By removing foreign debris, particularly plastics detrimental to intertidal and marine life, this annual event visibly improves the condition of our shorelines! If you would like to help, look for our annual call for volunteers in March or April.
