Celebrating 10 Years of Shoreline Care

May 12, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

A Community Celebration

Join us for a community potluck in celebration of our Shoreline Care Program’s 10th year. This is a great opportunity to share your interest in the ocean and learn more about our marine environment. We will be joined by past Mayne Island Conservancy Executive Director Leanna Boyer, and volunteers from the Vancouver Apneist Freediving Club who will be on island mapping eelgrass that weekend. They have been volunteering with us for eleven years! We’ll aim to start eating at 6pm so please arrive with a dish in time to drop it off and grab a seat for dinner. As everyone is finishing dinner we’ll be making some short presentations and videos, including a not to be missed presentation from Dr. Lauren McWhinnie from the University of Victoria on Cetaceans of the Salish Sea.

Joining us as Guests

Vancouver Apneist Free Diver Club Volunteers: We will be joined for dinner by volunteers from the Vancouver Apneist Free Diving Club, who will be hungry from their day spent mapping eelgrass in Horton Bay.

Leanna Boyer: Past Mayne Island Conservancy Executive Director Leanna Boyer will be joining us. Leanna started our Shoreline Care Program in 2008, and has been working on community-led marine conservation projects ever since, including coordinating the free divers each year to map eelgrass beds around Mayne Island.

Dr. Lauren McWhinnie: Lauren is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Victoria where her work focuses on assessing and helping to mitigate the impacts of vessels on marine mammals. She will be presenting to us a talk on Cetaceans of the Salish Sea
