Nettle Feast

April 13 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The humble nettle is a powerful spring tonic loaded with vitamins and minerals. It makes a delicious tea and can be used in the place of greens in most recipes. It has medicinal qualities as well. In contemporary herbal medicine, stinging nettle is known to have antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, anti-infectious, hypotensive, and antiulcer characteristics, as well as the ability to prevent cardiovascular disease, in all parts of the plant (leaves, stems, roots, and seeds). – Stinging Nettles: Nuisance or Nutritious?

Nettle season is almost upon us, and what better way to celebrate than sharing the bounty in a community potluck and celebration?

Join us at the Agricultural Hall on Saturday, April 13th for a free and fun community event! 5pm-8pm.

Bring your favourite nettle dish to share, and delight in the variety of recipes your neighbours have cooked up.

Also welcome: your nettle tinctures, textiles, brews, salves, dyed items, tea, and other products to show to, or share with, other nettle enthusiasts!

This could be the beginning of an annual nettle celebration, such as Nettlefest on Galiano Island, and we want to recognize all the wonderful benefits and uses of this fantastic native plant.

Harvest safely and lawfully: remember, stinging nettles can be used for food up until they are knee-height, so the best time to pick them is when they are newly sprouted in the spring. Harvesting must be done on private property with permission: parks on the island are not open to harvest.
