Winter Walk Day: Mosses and other Bryophytes

February 9 @ 7:00 pm - February 10 @ 12:00 pm

Free – $10.00

Upcoming events with Dr. Terry McIntosh

Moss and Bryophytes presentation at the Ag Hall: by donation at the door, pre-registration not required

Moss and Bryophytes guided walk at Mount Parke: $10.00/participant. Free for participants under 16 years old. Please purchase tickets below.

BC is home to over 1000 species of bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts), but these diverse and beautiful plants are easily overlooked since they are rarely more than 1-2cm tall. Our forests are carpeted in greens that range from olive and emerald to almost black. Rich golds, russets, and browns blanket our bogs. When skies are grey and deciduous plants are dormant or leafless, bryophytes still brighten our winter walks, so now is a perfect time to take a closer look at them.

Dr. Terry McIntosh will be joining us at Ag Hall on Friday, February 9th for his presentation, Living with Mosses: Stories from the World of Bryology. Terry’s enthusiastic, amusing, and passionate descriptions of mosses and their common associates, the liverworts, no doubt will awaken a new interest in the world of bryology for community members fortunate enough to be in attendance. Attendance is by donation and pre-registration is not required. Doors at 6:30pm, presentation begins at 7pm.

The very next day at 12pm, we will be joining Dr. McIntosh for a guided walk, where he will further introduce us to the intriguing world of bryophytes. A short walk along the Mary Jefferies trail will take a long time to complete as we stop every few feet to identify the dozens of mosses found in this beautiful forest sanctuary. Some common mosses will be identified, and hopefully rare ones too, and you will learn basic moss features to help you ID in the future. Attendance is $10.00 per participant over 16 years old. Pre-registration is required, please purchase tickets below.
