At the end of September, we bid a fond farewell to Katie Kushneryk. Katie worked with the Conservancy from April 2021 until September 2022 as our Stewardship Coordinator and will be missed! She has some big travel plans for the next while, and we wish her the best on her adventure.

Katie originally joined our small staff team for a six-month summer job but was kept on through the winter as we created a new second full-time staff position. This was a big moment for the Conservancy and represents our increased capacity and workload. Katie’s initiative and hard work were instrumental in expanding our programs and helping us reach our goals. She created our popular Family Nature Explorations Program and developed what will hopefully be a lasting partnership with the Mayne Island Early Childhood Society. She applied her marine sciences background to our Shoreline Care Program, leading a new partnership with the Hakai Institute for Dungeness crab monitoring, completing free-diving surveys for eelgrass, kayak surveys for bull kelp, and assisting with our geospatial data management. Katie led countless volunteer work parties for removal of invasive plants in habitat restoration sites and helped keep our small native plant nursery well watered and thriving. Her work ethic and positive energy will be missed. Farewell Katie!
