Variety of life is extremely important for the health of an ecosystem. I want to do my part to bring awareness to the incredible diversity in our ecosystems around the Gulf Islands in hope that people will be inspired to protect the life that thrives on the West Coast in the intricate system of ocean and forest together. I have kayaked before, but not a lot, and not along the areas we will be going, and I am excited to experience more of our island coast lines! I’m excited to see what animals, plants and insects there are to take note of, to admire and to learn about.

$709 of $500 raised
I am honored and thrilled to participate in the community effort to archive the species along the shorelines of Mayne and Galiano. I am a passionate nature-lover, climate activist, biochemist, and (hopefully about to become) a citizen scientist. I am committed to assist in documenting the biodiversity with the goal of conservation of this verdant yet sensitive ecosystem. My family has a cabin on Dinner Bay, Mayne Island and we have been paddling the beautiful Gulf Islands for decades.

I love the Ocean and I get out and enjoy it as often as I can as a boater, surfer, swimmer, beachcomber, fisherman…I’ve seen how we have treated our waters and try to give back every chance I get.

Exploring your favourite hiking trail or kayaking in a new spot, do you ever wonder what is living in the tiny hole in the tree bark or under the rocks beneath your boat? I do. Many biologists share the same curiosity, and those coming to our blitz will help us find and document as many species as they can in our communities. It’s an important job! With climate change affecting our ecosystems more and more with each passing day, we must document the species that surround us, so we know how they are changing with our changing world.

I’m paddling for the many species at home in the terrestrial and marine ecosystems of the Salish Sea! As of January 2019, no less than 4,000 species have been reported for Galiano and Mayne Islands, based on the observations of experts and community members alike. This year’s BioBlitz is an opportunity for everyone to add to this existing baseline. Please pledge your support for the living legacy we are working together to create as we document our local biodiversity.
