The campaign to save St. John Point is proceeding well. If you have friends and neighbours just arriving on Mayne Island for the season, please take a moment to tell them about the Save St. John Point Campaign, or direct them here to our website.
We have been working closely with Capital Region District for the last few months, and are pleased that they have released the following statement about the campaign:
“The CRD recognizes the high recreational and conservation values of this property, which make it a strong candidate for a regional park, and is working with Mayne Island Conservancy and American Friends of Canadian Land Trusts towards the acquisition of the property.”
We were delighted to hear recently from Harvey and Brenda Sasaki of Victoria. Harvey is the grandson of Kwanichi Sasaki, owner of the property until it was taken over in 1942 as part of the Veterans’ Land Act. Harvey has pledged support for the Save St. John Point project, and we look forward to learning more about his family’s historic connection to the Point.
We’d like to thank the artists of our community (and the greater community, reaching Victoria and beyond) who came to spend time with us on St. John Point as part of the Artists on the Point project. The next step in the project is the Artists on the Point Gathering and Auction on July 29. Artworks will be on display July 28 and 29, with an auction and performing arts event the evening of July 29. Artists: please check in here.
Guided walks to St. John Point will resume in June. You can sign up here; alternately we will have a sign-up list at the Farmers’ Market: sign up on Saturdays for a walk the next day.
Please stop by chat with us at the Market; if you have pledged support we’d like to thank you with one of our new “I Helped Save St. John Point” buttons. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to support the protection of this beautiful and historic piece of Mayne Island, please stop by the Farmers Market and we’ll tell you how to get involved.
Lastly, we’d like to remind everyone that St. John Point remains in private hands. The Eddy brothers have consented to allow access to the property only for special guided tours and visits. We thank everyone for respecting their wishes.
