Staff Housing Needed

The Conservancy is excited to welcome Ethan Heckrodt, Amelia Marshall, and Kamilla Hindmarch to our team for the 2026 field season. Ethan will be with us from April – September, Amelia from May-June, and Kamilla from July – August. These bright young professionals will make essential contributions to our habitat restoration, plant nursery, marine monitoring, and public engagement programs.
We Need Your Help!
We are seeking rental accommodation options for these staff. If you have a room, cabin, or trailer for rent or are looking for some house sitting help please let us know. This is an opportunity to host a responsible young professional for a set length of time. If you have an accommodation option, please email details such as available dates, rental rate, and a description of amenities (ideally with pictures) to Rob Underhill at biologist@mayneconservancy.ca.
Introducing Our Summer Staff
Ethan Heckrodt
Hi there! I’m Ethan, and this April I will be beginning my role as an Ecosystem Technician with the Mayne Island Conservancy. I am thrilled to contribute to the Conservancy’s exciting work and to join your wonderful island community for the season. I was raised on Silyx Territories (Vernon BC) and I completed my undergrad in Environmental Studies and Geography at the University of Victoria. Since then, I have lived in small communities throughout the province working in the intersections of organic farming and environmental education, conservation, and restoration. In my free time, I enjoy growing, gathering, and cooking delicious food, fibre and textile crafting, kayaking, biking, hiking, and swimming (and on and on). I look forward to exploring the lands and waters of the Gulf Islands this summer.

What I’m looking for in a home:
I am looking for a space from April to September. I am very flexible as to what that might look like (independent/ shared/ etc). I enjoy opportunities to contribute and form good relationships with my host(s). I am an avid gardener, and am great with animals, and kids (I have worked extensively in childcare and education). I am an organized and responsible tenant and a very good communicator. Please reach out if you feel I could be a good fit!
Amelia Marshall
Hello! My name is Amelia, and I’m excited to be joining the Mayne Island Conservancy this May and June as an Ecosystem Technician. Over the past few years, I’ve had the pleasure of living and working on several Gulf Islands, including Thetis Island last year, and Galiano and Salt Spring as a Student Ranger two summers ago. I recently graduated from the University of Victoria with a BSc in Geography and Environmental Studies, and have spent the last few years working in a variety of roles surrounding community science and engagement. I’m really looking forward to getting to know Mayne Island, both its landscapes and its community, while contributing to stewardship work with the Conservancy. I enjoy hiking, swimming, snorkelling, (light) running, knitting, and cooking in my free time, and always appreciate to do it with some company!

What I’m looking for in a home:
I’m open to a variety of housing situations, though a functional kitchen would be ideal since I enjoy cooking. I may have a little bit of extra storage with me – 1 or 2 totes of outdoor gear and yarn – so a place to store that would be a plus! Besides that, I’m easy and flexible, and look forward to sharing a space and getting to know the community. I am also happy to help out around the property – garden help, maintenance, projects, whatever!
Kamilla Hindmarch
My name is Kamilla and I am very excited to spend the summer working with the team at Mayne Island Conservancy! I’m looking forward to being apart of local conservation projects and getting to know the community on the island. I graduated from UVic in 2024 with a degree in Marine Biology and Environmental Studies. In the past year, I’ve been working in both environmental research and consulting, with a focus on ecological governance, remote field-based data collection, and collaborative research. I’m passionate about environmental education and stewardship, collaborative research, and community driven conservation initiatives. I grew up on the Sunshine Coast, which sparked my love of the ocean, and I enjoy getting out on my mountain bike, peering into tide pools, surfing amongst the kelp, freediving in the coastal waters, and all things outdoors. In my free time, I like to blend ecology and art, and to share my curiosity about the natural world with others through local species artwork and photography.

What I am looking for in a home:
I’m looking for accommodation on Mayne Island from July to August (I will be on Galiano Island May and June) and would be happy with a variety of options, such as a studio, shared house, or small suite. I enjoy making yummy food, gardening, and looking after animals, and would be willing to share in these tasks. In my free time, I enjoy reading, sewing, pottery, and hopping on my bike to explore. I live low impact and with sustainability in mind. An outdoor yard space, a garden, or somewhere to store a bicycle would be a bonus!
