Stewardship of Edith Point

Published by Rob Underhill on

We are excited to announce we have begun a new partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) for the stewardship of Edith Point. We worked closely with the NCC and the Graves Family for years, leading to the purchase of 87-acres at Edith Point by the NCC in 2022. The Mayne Island Conservancy recently signed a contract to steward the property in collaboration with NCC starting April 15th, 2025.

The Mayne Island Conservancy’s role will include maintaining trails, responding to public inquiries, and leading habitat restoration efforts. Over the coming months you will begin to see changes on the property, such as trimming of trailside vegetation, new signage, and the removal of invasive plants. The property will remain open to low-impact recreation such as hiking and wildlife viewing. We are committed to working with the community and the NCC to ensure this amazing property remains open to the public in a way that does not threaten the many native species that live there or the habitats they rely upon.

Introduced species such as Scotch broom will be managed by the Mayne Island Conservancy at Edith Point.

Edith Point is a valuable ecological area with high conservation value. It is home to a wide diversity of native plants and animals, including more than 170 vascular plants, 76 mosses, liverworts, and hornworts, 50 bird species, 8 mammal species, 4 amphibians, and 3 reptiles! Properties like this containing relatively pristine examples of Coastal Douglas fir ecosystems have become very rare.

Please help us steward this special place by being a responsible visitor, staying on trails, respecting wildlife, and leaving no trace. If you are interested in volunteering to assist our stewardship efforts at Edith Point, please contact us at info@mayneconseervancy.ca

Staying on designated trails helps ensure our community can enjoy this special place while minimizing impacts to native plants and animals.
