“The Southern Gulf Islands Whale Sighting Network is a volunteer citizen-led organization for monitoring and gathering field data on whale movements around Saturna, Pender and Mayne Islands. This data is used to better understand the Southern Resident killer whales (SRKW), Bigg’s (Transient) killer whales, humpbacks, minke and other cetacean species, and support them in their natural habitat in the Salish Sea.” – SIMRES

Mayne Island is in need of a Local Coordinator!

Tasks include:

  • Coordinating Mayne Island volunteers and providing contact information for the group.
  • Troubleshooting questions from volunteers, including questions about the Discord App or the Whale Sighting App. Don’t know what Discord or the Whale Sighting App is? No problem! The new coordinator will be trained up and will have a lot of support from other island coordinators when it comes to using Discord and the Whale Sighting App.
  • Encouraging Sighters to continue with their observations and post their photos.
  • Direct policy/regulation/gov’t questions to the Regional Coordinator (Susie Washinton-Smyth).
  • Occasionally send out a note to see how folks are doing/what is going on.

The position will be about 3-5 hours a month.
