Please join us in welcoming two seasonal staff to our team! Ethan Heckrodt started on April 7^th and is already making a big contribution to our nursery and land stewardship projects, he will be with us until the end of September. Amelia Marshall begins an 8-week term with us on May 4^th and we’re excited to have her join our team. Read more about these new members of our community below.

Ethan Heckrodt

Ethan grew up in Silyx Territories (Vernon BC) and completed his undergrad in Environmental Studies and Geography at the University of Victoria. Since then, he has lived in small communities throughout the province working in the intersections of organic farming and environmental education, conservation, and restoration. Ethan was first introduced to conservation in the Southern Gulf Islands during an internship with the Galiano Conservancy in 2021. Since then, he’s gained a wealth of experience with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, and a number of organic farms. He just returned from New Zealand where he completed hiking the Te Araroa trail and is keen to explore the Gulf Islands this summer. Please welcome Ethan when you meet him at the markets or other Conservancy events.

Amelia Marshall

Amelia recently graduated from the University of Victoria with an undergraduate degree in Geography and Environmental Studies. Like Ethan, she has gotten a taste of small community living in the Southern Gulf Islands and is coming back for more. Amelia worked with the Thetis Island Conservancy in 2025, contributing to a range of projects similar to ones we run here on SḴŦAḴ | Mayne Island. She’s also gained experience working across BC for BC Parks, BC Parks Foundation, and BC Conservation Foundation. Amelia will work with us until the end of June before heading across Active Pass to work with our neighbours at the Galiano Conservancy. We’re excited to have Amelia join us, please welcome her to our community.
