We are lucky. Supporters of the Mayne Island Conservancy are thoughtful individuals, who share a concern for our work and are committed to conserve the ecology of Mayne Island and its surrounding waters for future generations.

Often people think about contributing to the causes they care about with monthly donations and/or volunteering time, but more people are going one step further to leave a gift to charity in their Wills. They realized they can make a powerful contribution that will last for generations to come, without taking away from the resources they or their families need.

When you look into it, you may be surprised to learn that a donation of as little as a 1% of your estate can result in a bigger contribution than you ever thought possible.

You are still leaving 99% of your estate to support your loved ones, and you’re not using any of the money you need now.

Here are a few suggestions that can help you take the next steps to leaving a gift in your Will:

  1. Calculate your donation. You can determine how much you want to leave to charity, and how much you want your loved ones to receive, with a simple calculation. You can make that calculation using the Legacy Calculator tool developed by Will Power.
  • Discover the tax benefits. Canada’s tax incentives encourage more giving to charity especially from your estate.
  • Ask a financial advisor. Consulting a financial expert can help you maximize your donation and ensure it works in your favour. You can use Will Power’s Financial Advisor Finder to match with an expert in your region. There is also a handy guide available to start the conversation with your advisor here.

Every single bequest, no matter the size, will make a difference in our work on Mayne. Your values today will be reflected in your legacy and the ongoing work of the Conservancy.

What’s the Will Power Campaign?  The Mayne Conservancy is partnering with the Will Power campaign that is working with more than 400 charities, financial advisors, and lawyers to educate Canadians on how they can leave a legacy to a cause they care about and also take care of the ones they love through a gift in their Will. When I looked at the financial advisors, I was surprised to see that there were no advisors from Nicola Wealth Management. We have used another one of the advisors’ firms mentioned and feel that Nicola is superior. I hope this is an appropriate comment to post.

Hi Wayne. Thanks for your comment which I’ve sent to Helen O’Brian the Conservancy Fundraising Chair to respond. Helen is coordinating the Will Power campaign for the Conservancy. In the meantime, I hope you’re having a great trip. Robin.
