A Helping Hand from the UVic Ecological Restoration Club

Published by Rob Underhill on

On February 16th we were pleased to host 15 members of the UVic Ecological Restoration Club. This was the fourth consecutive year the Conservancy hosted the Club. Under the coordination of Executive Member Katia Bannister, the Club members contribute their time to habitat restoration projects across southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. These events offer great learning opportunities to Club members while providing some free labour to local restoration projects. It’s a win-win!

In past years the Restoration Club has helped with work at the Hedgerow Farm wetland restoration site, removing Himalayan blackberry and planting native trees and shrubs. This year, plans had to change at the last minute due to extremely wet soils; a result of recently thawed ground and heavy rain. Fortunately, we were able to provide a tour of our drier restoration sites at St. John Point Regional Park, and the Club helped us remove Scotch broom and carry dozens of tree cages from the middle of the park that were no longer in use.

A huge thank you to Katia and the other members of the Restoration Club for helping again this year and we hope to see them again in the future!
